Redistricting Forum. The purpose of this forum is to prepare citizens to testify at the Legislature's Town Hall Meeting on Redistricting to be held September 2nd in Lawrence.

BACKGROUND: Based on data from the 2010 Census, the number of Kansas Representatives to the U.S. House did NOT change.

However, population growth and shifts have occurred within Kansas, thereby necessitating the drawing of new district boundaries for our 4 Congressional Districts, and Kansas Legislative Districts for both the Senate and House. The Kansas City Star has reported that politicians are considering Wyandotte County as an addition to the sparsely populated Big 1st District. Is that possible?

This forum will address following questions: What is the redistricting process in Kansas? How has Kansas' demographic data changed since 2000? What's at stake for Lawrence when new boundaries are drawn? What tools are available to Kansas citizens to help them analyze population data and draw their own new district boundaries for consideration by policy makers?

Forum presenters: Corey Carnahan, Research Analyst, Kansas Legislative Research Department

Burdett Loomis, PhD Professor Political Science Dept, University of Kansas

Come out to listen, learn and develop your own opinion on this important topic for Lawrence.
